QR Codes on Product Packaging
How to use QR codes on product packaging for tracking, authentication, re-order links, and post-purchase engagement.
Size: 1.5 × 1.5 cm minimum, 2.5 × 2.5 cm preferred
Product packaging has limited space. The smallest reliable scan size is about 1.5 cm on smooth, matte surfaces. Glossy or curved surfaces need at least 2.5 cm for reliable scanning.
Flat surface > curved surface
QR codes on flat areas (back panel, bottom) scan more reliably than codes wrapped around bottle necks or tube edges. If you must use a curved surface, increase the code size.
Matte finish beats glossy
Glossy surfaces create glare under indoor lighting, which can prevent scanning. A matte or semi-matte finish over the QR code area eliminates reflections.
What to link on packaging
Re-order links (direct to your shop), product registration forms, authentication/anti-counterfeit checks, instruction videos, warranty registration, and customer support WhatsApp.
Use dynamic QR for multi-language
If you sell the same product in multiple countries, use a dynamic QR code that detects the scanner's language and redirects to the right manual or support page.
Don't print over the code
Never overlay text, logos, or patterns on top of the QR code itself. The quiet zone (white border around the code) must remain clear for scanning.
