If you need to know how many people scanned your QR code, where they are, and what devices they used — you need a dynamic QR code. Static QR codes cannot be tracked because the data is encoded directly in the image with no server involved. Dynamic codes use a redirect server that logs each scan event, giving you real-time analytics. Here is exactly how tracking works, what data you get, and how to set it up for free.
Why static QR codes cannot be tracked
A static QR code encodes the destination directly into the pixel pattern. When a phone scans it, the camera decodes the payload locally and opens the destination — no request hits any server, so there is nothing to count. This is a structural property of static codes, not a limitation of any particular generator.
The destination page itself can run its own analytics (e.g., Google Analytics on the landing page), but that only counts visits to the page, not QR scans specifically. If someone shares the URL without scanning, it shows up as a page visit — you cannot distinguish scan traffic from other sources.
How dynamic QR tracking works
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL (e.g., api.qrpress.in/r/xyz) instead of the final destination. Each scan passes through the redirect server, which:
- Logs the scan event (timestamp, device type, country, referrer)
- Increments the scan counter
- Redirects the visitor to the current destination (HTTP 302)
The whole process adds under 100ms of latency — imperceptible to the scanner. The redirect server is the only point where tracking happens; the scanner is never fingerprinted or tracked across sites.
What analytics you get with QRPress dynamic codes
| Metric | What it shows | How it is derived |
|---|---|---|
| Total scan count | How many times the code was scanned | Server-side counter |
| Scans over time | Daily/weekly/monthly scan trends | Timestamp from each scan event |
| Device type | Mobile vs desktop split | User-Agent header parsing |
| Country / city | Geographic distribution of scanners | Cloudflare headers (CF-IPCountry) |
| Referrer | Where scans came from | HTTP Referer header |
No personal identifying information is collected. We do not store IP addresses, names, email addresses, or any PII about scanners. The analytics are aggregated for your dashboard only.
How to set up scan tracking for free
- Create a free account at qrcodegenerator.qrpress.in (no credit card, no trial timer).
- Go to the dynamic QR generator and create a code with your destination URL.
- Download the QR code as PNG or SVG and print it wherever you need tracking.
- Open the dashboard to view scan analytics in real time.
There are no scan caps, no code limits, and no expiry on the free tier. Track as many codes and as many scans as you need.
Use cases for scan tracking
- **Marketing campaigns**: compare scan rates across posters, flyers, and window displays to see which placement drives traffic.
- **Menu updates**: track how many guests scan the PDF menu QR code per table to optimise layout.
- **UPI payments**: monitor how often the payment QR is scanned at each counter to measure peak hours.
- **Product packaging**: measure post-purchase engagement by tracking scans of codes on product boxes.
For any print placement where you need to know "did anyone scan this?" — a dynamic code with tracking answers the question for free.
